About Chef Sera Cuni and Cafe Root Cellar

Chef Sera Cuni is the chef and owner of two North Carolina restaurants: Root Cellar Cafe & Catering in Chapel Hill and a sister spin-off, Cafe Root Cellar in Pittsboro. Cafe Root Cellar is the product of change – the evolution of a Chapel Hill landmark. Originally planted in Pittsboro in 2018, Chef Sera re-explores American cuisine and showcases the “go big or go home” seasonal dishes she’s always loved to create without straying too far from her original roots. Cafe Root Cellar’s food is elevated to new heights. Chef Sera changes her menu weekly and uses hyper-local ingredients, most often from the surrounding farmers markets in Chatham County. She has developed great relationships with farmers throughout the county, some of whom ask what she would like for them to grow for her. The changing weekly menu is a huge reason first time customers become regulars - it's like going to a different restaurant every week.

Classically trained in the culinary arts, Chef Sera launched her career in her home state of Connecticut, where she grew up surrounded by a family of cooks who embraced their Italian and Czech foodie traditions. Her early kitchen experiences, including Connecticut restaurants Main and Hopewell, Americus on the Wharf, and Pastis, helped to inform and influence the cuisine she loves to cook today – creative and flavorful dishes that reflect the vast diversity of foods across the Midwest and Southern United States. A founding member of the North Carolina chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier and a selected member of Sterling Silver’s Signature Chefs, Chef Sera devotes her free time to supporting other women culinary entrepreneurs and working with nonprofits to address food insecurity in North Carolina.
