Friends of Tabletop: Meet Mikkel and Dan From Sometimes Home

We are so excited to continue our monthly series highlighting the many social influencers and bloggers who have become not only our colleagues, but our friends throughout our journey with Tabletop Media Group. Last year, we started a new series here on the #TabletopTalk blog called, “Friends of Tabletop.” We’re here to spread some positivity and highlight the bloggers + influencers who we enjoy collaborating with and who are so incredibly talented!

This month, we’re featuring Mikkel and Dan from Sometimes Home. Dan and Mikkel are travel and food bloggers who cover the Triangle and beyond! Check out our fun Q&A with them both!

Tell us about Sometimes Home.

We are co-owners of Sometimes Home. We met, fell in love and got married in Raleigh so it's very special to us! We write about destinations near and far, including North Carolina and international locales like Norway and Japan, and hope to inspire our readers for their next vacation! Mikkel was/is a professional photographer before venturing into travel writing and Dan a Creative Director in marketing so we make a beautiful team.

Why do you write about food + Triangle happenings?

We absolutely love culinary experiences and this area of North Carolina so it's a no-brainer for us to write about it and share, not just with locals but also visitors who want to be a part of the food culture here.

What are you currently reading?

Mikkel: More than Enough by Elaine Welteroth (she was the youngest editor appointed to Teen Vogue, by Anna Wintour, and is a judge on Project Runway!)

Dan: Leadership Strategy and Tactics by Jocko Willink

What's your favorite ice cream flavor?

Mikkel: Mint chocolate chip

Dan: vanilla

What is your least favorite food?

Mikkel's favorite food is a specific type of Danish pickled herring.

Dan's least favorite food is probably something in the Indian cuisine realm!

What about favorite food?

There's so many foods we adore but collectively we most regularly eat sushi and pho. Dan also loves a great steak and Mikkel loves Shrimp 'n Grits. (Any southern food, really!)

Pho: Ko.an in Cary, NC

Steak: 41Hundred

Shrimp & Grits: Whiskey Kitchen

Bar order?

Mikkel: dirty vodka martini

Dan: bourbon, neat, or a west coast beer

What's the most useful lesson you've learned from being a food blogger?

People eat with their eyes so great photo are a must. Secondly, a description of what you ate is important. Not just "pasta with sauce" but more specifically, something like "squid ink pasta with a white wine and garlic butter sauce..." Foodies appreciate that kind of stuff and that's usually who wants to read food blog posts.

What's your most unpopular opinion about food?

Ironically it's the same thing for both of us but opposite ends of the opinion: Mikkel thinks you have to finish everything on your plate and Dan doesn't.

If you could redo one thing in regards to your blogging / social influencer career what would it be?

We would have included affiliate links a lot sooner to monetize the blog. Money isn't everything but if you can make passive income, why not?
